Second Hackathon at the OIS
by bridget. Average Reading Time: almost 2 minutes.
Our Hackathons are still continuing at the OIS, and we held our second one there last night. As this is a very busy time of year for many people, and most students have now gone home for the holiday, our turnout was small. Nevertheless, as long as we have volunteers that are prepared to stop by for a couple of hours, we will host Hackathons and make sure they have enough sustenance to get them through the chapters!
Once again we assembled in the boardroom with our laptops, and got everyone some refreshments and snacks. Heather got our volunteers up to speed with current chapters that needed finishing off, and assigning any new chapters that could be started on. Yesterday was an incredibly hot day and everyone was feeling somewhat drained, but after a refreshing glass of Coca Cola, we were good to go!
We decided that supper would come from Nando’s, and our lunch table held quite a feast on our return with the food. Everyone was ready for a break by then, so we all sat down together for supper.
There was much laughter and light-hearted conversation while everyone was eating, and then things took a more serious turn when we asked our volunteers why they keep returning for our Hackathons, week after week. They all agreed that working on FHSST is a really easy way to give back to the community and make a real difference to young South Africans’ lives. We need to change South Africa through education, and FHSST is just the way to do that!
After supper it was back to work, despite it being close on 9pm. Coffee was served, and the boardroom became a small hive of activity again as everyone settled back down to their chapters. The team was tackling two tough chapters that basically need to be rewritten, so progress was slow. These chapters are Grade 10′s Equations and Inequalities, and Products and Factors. Heather is carrying on with them today, making the necessary changes, so hopefully it wont be too long before those are completed too.
Thank you so much to our very special volunteers that came – you guys are awesome.
