Description of project: Edupeg is a unique injection-moulded pegboard that is utilised in conjunction with workbooks and provides multiple-choice, self-corrective, integrated teaching activities. It is designed to be utilised in an outcomes based education system. By correcting their own work, learners take control of their own learning. The activities are contained in 22 individual colour-coded workbooks and commence with perceptual activities, upon which all learning is based. The activities progress to cross-curricular exercises, including language and literacy, numeracy, life skills and human and environmental science. The main focus is on numeracy and literacy. The Shuttleworth Foundation's involvement: The Shuttleworth Foundation is sponsoring Edupeg for 42 disadvantaged schools in Ceres, Ashton, McGregor, Robertson, Wolsley and Prince Alfred Hamlet. These schools requested to be part of the 2003 Edupeg programme. With a close relationship between Edupeg and the Worcester School clinic, the Foundation?s involvement also affords the schools with an Edupeg training component. Aims and objectives: Edupeg aims to provide support to teachers by providing a graded, flexible, challenging and fun programme that is easily understood by learners and easy to utilise. It also aims to instill a positive attitude towards learning in young learners, particularly to numeracy and literacy. Updated Status (December 2003): The final report from Edupeg concluded the Foundations involvement in this project with a satisfactory fulfillment of the objectives. Evaluations have also shown the success of the project with complimentary comments from educators and learners. The intervention was particularly successful in assisting educators to teach in multi-grade rural environments allowing learners to work at their own pace and level. Updated Status (July 2003): All training has been completed. The workshops were held in Prins Alfred Hamlet, Ceres, Wosleley, Ashton, McGregor and Robertson and were completed successfully with good attendance by teachers, principals and education officials. A final report from Edupeg is outstanding. Status (April 2003): 9000 Edupeg workbooks and pegboards have been dispatched to the 42 schools and training is currently underway. |
