Description of project: The learning area ?technology? was introduced into schools by the National Department of Education, without sufficient training of educators in the teaching of it. A need therefore exists to train the educators in technology so that the subject can be properly taught in schools. The Shuttleworth Foundation's involvement: The Shuttleworth Foundation is funding a Protec project that aims to train 50 educators in 20 schools in the subject technology. Protec will be developing, printing and providing the educators with suitable curriculum materials, as well as doing training workshops and in-class interaction. Aims and objectives: Apart from training 50 technology educators, the project will provide a model for the actual training of technology educators which the Education Departments could then adopt for the training of more educators. Status (December 2003): The implementation of this project started in 2003, and will continue into 2004 - currently 20 schools have been chosen through interaction with the Mpumulanga Department of Education and materials have been printed. |
