Description of project:

CASME is a unit based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. This project involves the organizing and facilitation of a KwaZulu-Natal province-wide mathematics Olympiad aimed particularly at learners in previously disadvantaged schools. An important aspect of the project is the development of a scalable model for the implementation of Olympiads that can be easily applied and implemented at district and regional levels.

The Shuttleworth Foundation's involvement:

The Foundation is funding the organization, facilitation and support of both phases of the KZN province-wide Olympiad, scheduled to take place from March to October 2004.

Aims and objectives:

• To encourage learners from previously disadvantaged schools to get involved in support activities such as the Olympiad
• To develop a model that can be applied at both district and regional level
• To increase the number of learners from previously disadvantaged schools that take part in the Olympiad at national level
