Description of project:

Noreen Burton of the Department of Education at Fort Hare University (previously part of Rhodes University) is involved in a research project that looks at the creation of an exciting interactive resource for teaching the periodic table of elements to learners. This resource would mainly consist of a dramatization incorporating audiovisual material aimed at introducing learners to the periodic table.

Once the dramatisation of materials have been tested at various forums, they would then be made available on CD and as a powerpoint presentation that educators can then use in conjunction with the Fest periodic time table also funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation

The Shuttleworth Foundation's involvement:

The Foundation is involved in funding the further research and development of this resource including testing it in schools and presenting it at various conferences including the Sasol SciFest in Grahamstown

Aims and objectives:

  • To create a resource that would make learning more effective and fun for both learners and educators
  • To present the resources at various workshops and conferences in order to get feedback from both learners and educators as well as other science educational specialists

Timeline and deliverables:

November 2003 - November 2004

Status: (March 2004)

The presentation has already been made at various schools in Grahamstown and at some conferences in and outside South Africa and received great reviews from all those who have seen it.
