Description of project:

This project focuses on creating an enabling environment for rural girls from the impoverished area of Giyani, a small town located in the North Eastern lowveld of the Limpopo Province.

The Shuttleworth Foundation's involvement:

The Shuttleworth Foundation is funding the Giyani Education Multi-purpose Centre to train 81 girls in Grades 10 and 11 to excel at mathematics and science through a multi-disciplinary programme, including mathematics, science and life orientation. An educator's component is included to ensure that these female learners receive the necessary continued guidance after the workshops have been concluded.

Aims and objectives:

To popularize the choice of mathematics and science in the further education and training band, and to break the misconception around the gender bias of boys excelling in mathematics and science.

Timeline and deliverables:

May 2003 to April 2004

Status: (March 2004)

The training was successful and well received by both the learners and their educators. They are all presently busy preparing for their local expo, which will feed directly into the regional and national expo.
