The Old Mutual MTN ScienCentre, together with the Shuttleworth Foundation, is presently running an exciting educational music programme for high school learners. The programme is unique in that it is not only an educational programme which teaches learners how to make their own music, but it is also a local competition where the winner will win a Sound Technology course and get his/her song recorded on a compilation CD. PHASE ONE of the programme (March- May 2004) consists of two sub-programmes: The Physics of Sound: This will focus on the physics and mathematics of sound, and the basics of sound production from musical instruments, both Western and African. The workshops will cover subjects that are components of the QBE curriculum. Interactive 'Physics of Sound' educational workshops will be offered to ALL schools visiting the centres over the Phase 1 period. The class will consist of 30 learners (two per computer). Space is strictly limited to 1200 learners (60 learners per school) so please book early. PHASE TWO. From these workshops, the 200 learners with the best aptitude in sound will be selected to take part in Phase 2 where they will receive tutoring more focused on computer skills in the creation of music. Also the various career opportunities will be presented at this stage by music producers, advertising agencies, DJ`s and other related industry professionals. PHASE THREE. The 20 learners showing the best aptitude in the field of producing music will be chosen for Phase 3. The workshops in this phase will be run by specialist producers. Top role players from within the industry will also run supplemental industry workshops. PHASE 4. In the final phase the top five finalists will compete for the best produced song, as judged by a panel from the music industry, media and the ScienCentre.
