Shuttleworth Foundation Funded Projects:

Shuttleworth Tuxlab program for schools

In 2002 the Foundation started to actively promote the use open source software as a computer lab solution for schools. The Shuttleworth Foundation strongly believes that open source software should be the preferred choice of software for schooling in South Africa. Open source software provides users with freedoms not obtainable from proprietary software, this includes the freedom to obtain, use, modify and distribute the software. The Foundation initiated a pilot to prove the effectiveness of open source software as a school computing solution.

Linux Libraries
Initiated internally, this project involved the establishment of open source based computing centres in three libraries within disadvantaged areas. The project served to prove that open source software could be used to deliver an effective and economical solution for public technology access projects.

Alexander Sinton High School Linux Lab
Initiated by Linuxlab.org.za and funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation, this project aimed to establish an open source based computing centre at Alexander Sinton High School in Athlone, Western Cape. This project hoped to prove that extremely low-spec hardware, together with Linux, can be used to deliver a computer lab solution for schools.

Translate.org.za
Initiated by the Zuza Software Foundation, and funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation, this project aimed to produce multi-lingual South African versions of common open source software applications.

Shuttleworth Open Source Learning Centre @ Nooitgedacht
Initiated internally, this pilot project involved the establishment of an open source based computer learning centre at Nooitgedacht Primary School in Bishops Lavis, Western Cape. The project aimed to prove that low-spec hardware and Linux can be used to successfully establish open source based computer centres in schools

Shuttleworth Open Source Learning Centre @ Hyde Park
Continuing the the piloting of open source based computing centres, the Shuttleworth Foundation established another open source learning centre at Hyde Park Primary in Grassy Park, Western Cape.

Shuttleworth Linux Computer Bank
Initiated internally, this project aimed to facilitate the installation of further Shuttleworth Open Source Learning Centres by making use of students to participate the installation and configuration process. In return for their time, students were provided with valuable experience and trained on the use and administration of Linux.
